ABOUT THE BOOK

“My name… is Sam Sailor. Like the others, I am trapped here. And I will die here.”

In 1984, figure skater Iris Sailor’s life unravels after a devastating fall on the ice exposes her secrets, ends her career, and leaves her isolated after being abandoned by her coach and boyfriend. With nowhere left to turn, she returns home—still haunted by the disappearance of her estranged sister, Sam.

Everything changes when Iris discovers an old postcard tucked into her mail. It is postmarked September 14, 1981—the day Sam vanished. On the back is a single word: HELP.

The message leads Iris to Nova Bay, a remote Northern California cove, where she uncovers a series of cassette tapes left behind by Sam. Through them, Sam narrates the events leading up to her disappearance three years earlier.

As Iris follows the fragmented recordings and buried clues, she is forced to confront a history of family secrets, betrayal, and memory she has spent her life avoiding. But the deeper she goes, the more unstable the truth becomes—and the more dangerous it is to keep listening.

To find Sam, Iris must piece together what really happened in Nova Bay… before the past pulls her under for good.
